The title was inspired by a radio interview I heard with an astronaut talking about space walks and the sensation of being "in space".
He talked about a darkness you simply can't know on earth - an infinite darkness that makes you feel simultaneously small compared to it's expanse - and claustrophobic because you can't see the end of your nose.
Without visual references or gravity, there is no up or down, or left or right. Even the basic sense of motion has vanished. It's disorienting, to say the least. At times it's incredibly serene and peaceful. And suddenly, panic inducing. He called it - The Black.
This track started simply enough with the opening harmonics passage played by Jeff on fretless bass. Steve reacted to that adding textures and counter melodies on upright bass. Then Jeff reacted to what Steve created - and so on - and so on.
